For Professor Renee Sieber, it’s complicated. AI has a lot of potential for public good by improving public transport systems or balancing electrical grids. But she’s concerned that, if we’re not careful, we might lose humanity in our government services. Renee Sieber is an Associate Professor in the department of geography at McGill University. In this interview, she walks us through how government applications of AI should be treated differently from the private sector. She also shares her perspective on the opportunities and perils of using AI in the public sector, and why we should be careful with how we apply this new technology.
