Welcome to this Production Expert review of the RME Advanced Remote Control USB. As the name suggests, this is a USB version of the ARC Remote that previously had a proprietary connection for specific RME interfaces, such as my Fireface 802. The USB version was originally intended just to be used with the newer generation RME UFX interfaces, but in their infinite wisdom, RME have decided to make it fully backwards compatible with any RME interface, be it firewire, USB or PCI, that uses their TotalMix Software. RME have taken the opportunity to bring extended functionality with the USB version, including seven more buttons and a footswitch socket. All of the buttons, the rotary encoder and the footswitch input, are fully assignable to a wide range of functions and are not limited just to the legends printed on the remote. RME supply a set of labels which allow you to customize the functions through TotalMix. When used with an RME interface with onboard USB recording, these functions include transport control. I have put my existing ARC remote next-door to the USB to give a good comparison. It is perfectly possible to have both working in tandem and there are separate setup menus within TotalMix. Being USB, the new ARC is not limited in where it can be located by the proprietary hard wired lead of the old model. Indeed, I have even got it working over VirtualHere and it is currently plugged into my Network Storage which has a VirtualHere Server installed. So now, the ARC USB can be anywhere in your studio, your house or indeed anywhere in the world. Setting up the RME ARC USB is very simple – just plug it into the host computer’s USB port and then on the Options tab of TotalMix, select ARC & Key Commands. You can see that the assignable buttons can switch my setup snapshots and that the rotary encoder can be set up to control my 7.1 monitoring level or indeed also mute my speakers when I enable the phantom power on my mic input. There are many other useful functions that can be automated Construction wise, this unit is as bulletproof as the original. The only issue I’ve had with my original in four years is that the letters are starting to wear off on my most used buttons. RME have addressed this in the ARC USB by printing the legends below the buttons, rather than on them. Altogether this is a must-have piece of kit for any RME interface owner, and at only in the region of £110 in the UK currently, is a real no-brainer.
