During the 19th century, there were huge wars over possession and control of the Rhine River between Germany and France. Once, the Rhine River was considered one of the most polluted rivers in Europe. Due to a chemical leak that took place in Basel in 1986, which killed numerous species, this calamity culminated in the contamination of the whole Rhine river. In 1987, a Rhine action programme was devised to enhance the water quality and lower the discharges by 50–60 percent, which resulted in an increase in salmon in the Rhine river.
