Yuben Shinnen is one of the most important people in the history of crafting the Shikoku 88 Temple pilgrimage route into what it was today. He died in 1691 after going around the Shikoku pilgrimage at least 20 times. He wrote the first pilgrimage guidebook, the Shikoku henro michishirube in 1687. This best seller laid down the basic numbering system still used today and marked the temples, that, for the most part, are still visited today. He also erected the first stone markers aimed at helping pilgrims find their way between temples. This video looks at what we know about Shinnen with footage of the rather disappointing hut that was originally built by him in the 17th century, but which hasn’t been maintained to the level it should be given how important he was to the pilgrimage.
