Presentamos la XLV Conferencia del Ciclo de Conferencias de la Cátedra libre de Estudios Judíos Moses Mendelssohn (SEUBE, FFyL, UBA), “Leo Baeck y sus contextos imperiales” (“Leo Baeck and His Imperial Contexts”) a cargo del Dr. Yaniv Feller (University of Florida) realizada el domingo 17 de agosto de 2025 de forma virtual. La conferencia se dictó en inglés y cuenta con subtítulos en español. RESUMEN Leo Baeck fue un rabino, erudito y teólogo alemán del siglo XX. Fue líder del judaísmo reformista en su país natal e internacionalmente, y posteriormente representó a todos los judíos alemanes durante la era nazi. Tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial, se estableció en Londres, Reino Unido, donde presidió la Unión Mundial para el Judaísmo Progresista. En 1955 se fundó el Instituto Leo Baeck para el estudio de la historia y la cultura del judaísmo germanoparlante, y Baeck fue su primer presidente internacional. Impartió clases en la Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums. He was a leader of Reform Judaism in his native Germany and internationally, and later represented all German Jews during the Nazi era. Following World War II, he settled in London, United Kingdom, where he chaired the World Union for Progressive Jewry. In 1955, the Leo Baeck Institute for the Study of the History and Culture of German-Speaking Jewry was founded, and Baeck served as its first international president. He taught at the Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums. In 1905, Baeck published The Essence of Judaism, a response to Adolf von Harnack's "What is Christianity?", which interpreted Judaism through a neo-Kantian perspective with undertones of religious existentialism, establishing him as a Jewish thinker. At the same time, Leo Baeck's figure has been the subject of criticism—most famously, that of Hannah Arendt—and his positions have been discussed. This lecture aims to consider the circumstances that framed Leo Baeck's main positions, taking as a reference his debate with Adolf Harnack on the essence of religions. Second, the idea of Jewish missionariness. Third, the distinction between Macht and Kraft, or physical power and spiritual energy. Finally, the question of Zionism, showing how all these aspects are linked. EXPOSITOR Yaniv Feller es investigador especializado en pensamiento judío moderno y estudios museísticos. He is co-editor of Covenantal Thinking: Essays on the Philosophy and Theology of David Novak (University of Toronto Press, 2024) and the author of articles published in journals such as Comparative Studies in Society and History, New German Critique, and the Journal of Religion. Between 2015 and 2017, Yaniv served as curator of Jewish religion for the new permanent exhibition at the Jewish Museum Berlin. Yaniv Feller was the Jeremy Zwelling Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies at Wesleyan University and has been a professor at Florida State University since 2017
