If you have been gardening a long time, there is a good chance that you have a bunch of older seeds sitting around. How do you know if these seeds are still good? Planting high quality seeds is critical to a successful harvest. It is therefore important to do germination testing to make sure your older seeds are still good. In this video, I will show exactly how to do germination testing, and what to do with the seeds that successfully germinate. Most seeds last 3-5 years under ideal storage conditions. However, some seed types last longer while others are only good for a few years. Here are some guidelines for how long some commonly planted vegetables seeds can last when stored under ideal storage conditions: • Asian greens: 3 yrs. • Beans & peas: 2-4 yrs. • Beets: 2-5 yrs. • Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, Collard greens & Kale: 3-5 yrs. • Carrots: 3-4 yrs. • Cauliflower: 4-5 yrs. • Cucumber: 3-6 yrs. • Eggplant: 4-5 yrs. • Lettuce: 1-6 yrs. • Melons: 3-6 yrs. • Mustard greens: 4 yrs. • Okra: 2-3 yrs. • Onions: 1-2 yrs. • Peppers: 2-5 yrs. • Radish: 4-5 yrs. • Spinach: 1-5 yrs. • Squash: 3-6 yrs. • Swiss chard: 2-5 yrs. • Tomatoes: 3-7 yrs. Adapted from Johnny’s ‘Seeds Seed Storage Guide’ A more exhaustive list can be found at https://www.johnnyseeds.com/growers-l... To calculate the germination rate for the seeds, divide the number of healthy seedlings by the total number of seeds in the test and multiply by 100: (# healthy seedlings/# seeds in test) x 100 = % germination So, if you started with 10 seeds and 8 or the 10 germinated, the germination rate is 80%. Some seeds naturally have higher germination rate while others have lower rates. You will need to adjust the number of seeds planted in the garden according to the germination rate.
