(28 May 2021) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: 4328286 The sister of a Black man who died while restrained by Tacoma police officers says she has no sympathy for the officers who have been charged in her brother's death, and that she's disappointed they will not be kept in custody. "There's no forgiveness in my heart for them and what they've done. There's no sympathy in my heart for them or their children or their spouses. I have no sympathy, no empathy. I wish for them to stay in jail like most of the people that are housed here right now. There's people that are housed here that have done less and they're stuck in there," said Monet Carter-Mixon, sister of Manuel Ellis. Three Washington state police officers have pleaded not guilty to charges in the restraint death of Ellis, who repeatedly told them he couldn't breathe. Attorney General Bob Ferguson charged Tacoma officers Christopher Burbank and Matthew Collins, who are both white, with second-degree murder Thursday after witnesses said they attacked Ellis. Officer Timothy Rankine, who is Asian, is charged with manslaughter. They pleaded not guilty Friday in Pierce County Superior Court, where a judge set bail at $100,000 each. "There's people that are housed here that have done less and they're stuck in there," Carter-Mixon said. Ellis died March 3, 2020, weeks before George Floyd's death triggered a nationwide reckoning on race and policing.
