1. Combination Reaction A combination reaction occurs when two or more substances combine to form a single product. General form: A + B → AB Example: 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O In this reaction, hydrogen and oxygen combine to form water. These reactions usually release energy in the form of heat or light. 2. Decomposition Reaction A decomposition reaction happens when one compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances. Energy (heat, light, or electricity) is usually required. General form: AB → A + B Example: CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂ Here, calcium carbonate breaks down into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide when heated. 3. Displacement Reaction (Single Replacement Reaction) A displacement reaction occurs when a more reactive element replaces a less reactive element from its compound. General form: A + BC → AC + B Example: Zn + CuSO₄ → ZnSO₄ + Cu Zinc replaces copper from copper sulphate solution. 4. Double Displacement Reaction (Double Replacement Reaction) A double displacement reaction happens when two compounds exchange their ions to form two new compounds. General form: AB + CD → AD + CB Example: AgNO₃ + NaCl → AgCl + NaNO₃ Silver nitrate reacts with sodium chloride to form silver chloride (a white precipitate) and sodium nitrate. Summary Combination → Two or more substances combine into one. Decomposition → One substance breaks into simpler substances. Displacement → One element replaces another. Double Displacement → Exchange of ions between compounds.
