#themaltesefalcon #satanmetalady #dvdreview #noirvember I review the first two film adaptations of Dashiell Hammett's masterpiece THE MALTESE FALCON. They are fascinating attempts by Warner Bros to adapt the iconic novel and go about in VERY different ways. The 1931 film is full of bristling PreCode swagger with a heaping dose of sex and surprisingly most of Hammett's plot. The 1936 film has a terrible reputation for being a comedy remake but what makes it a complete misfire is the loony blending of comedy with chunks of Hammett's story. The tonal shifts are massive and constant. However without these two films we never would have gotten the 1941 masterpiece film. It also should be stressed that John Huston looked at these two films and immediately recognized the mistakes that had been made when he and others involved insisted on sticking with the novel for the third film adaptation. Both were released on the 2006 3 disc SE DVD of the 1941 masterpiece version but have sadly been dropped from the Blu-ray and UHD releases making them exclusive to this DVD set. 00:00 Introduction 01:23 1931 PrecCode version 16:51 Video availability 2006 DVD-never ported to BD and UHD 17:50 Picture and Audio Quality 19:26 Satan Met A Lady 31:48 William Dieterle and Arthur Edeson 32:20 Edison bringing this experience to the 1941 version and the parallels between The Maltese Falcon and Citizen Kane 34:09 1936 film pulls from 1931 adaptation 36:30 Summary and the film being possibly re-edited making it worse 37:26 DVD presentation quality, extremely worn print source 38:49 Original trailer included 39:39 2006 DVD packaging and artwork 40:05 Blu-ray and UHD remove 1931 and 1936 versions from extras package 40:26 Some DVD copies affected buy the Warner DVD rot issue 41:23 Final Summary
