Cinema and television, play a decisive role in the construction of collective memories, particularly as events slip out of living memory. Holocaust films have played a key role in increasing public awareness of the mass murder of the Jews. With a particular focus on Poland, but with reference to Soviet, American and European films, we will explore key themes and motifs used, and the way in which contemporary politics, society and individual directors’ viewpoints, influenced which Holocaust films were made, and how they presented this historic event. Films discussed: The Last Stage 1945 Border Street (Ulica Graniczna) 1948 Kapo 1961 Passenger (Pasażerka) 1963 La Rafle 2010 Holocaust 1979 Big Red One 1981 The Pianist 2002 Lucinda’s research interests have focused on the Second World War and its memorialisation, particularly in Poland. Her DPhil from Wolfson College, Oxford (2021) discussed representations of the Second World War in Polish cinema. This research built on previous work on the Katyń Massacre and portrayals of Poland in the interwar British press.
