The Second statement that Jesus made on the cross was to a thief who was also being crucified. The Jewish people believe that when the Messiah comes, he will restore God’s Kingdom. Isaiah 53 portrays the Messiah as a suffering Servant, despised and rejected by the people. Psalm 110 tells us that the Messiah will be a ruler who will judge his enemies. There is none so blind as those who will not see. In today's devotional, we will look at two people who were sentenced to death with Jesus. One remained with a hardened heart and died in his sins. The other crucified his hardened heart, and his eyes were opened. One of the main reasons that the Jewish people rejected Jesus as the Messiah was that they were focused on the Messiah of Psalm 110, overthrowing the Roman Empire. They did not realize that they were witnessing Isaiah 53 happening right before their eyes. The first thief joined in taunting Jesus and said, "Aren't you the Messiah?" Save yourself and save us also." Jesus did not acknowledge this statement. The Second thief jumped into the conversaiont saying, "Don't you fear God?" This man acknowledged Jesus as God. He acknowledged he was a sinner. He acknowledged that Jesus would rise again by saying, "Remember me when you go to your Kingdom." Jesus responded to this man with the second statement from the cross. Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.
