In 1948, Muhammad Ali Jinnah declared, “Urdu and only Urdu shall be the state language of Pakistan.” But what if that decision had fully succeeded? What if Bengali had never become a state language? And would February 21 ever have become International Mother Language Day, recognized by UNESCO in 1999?
