Smart Devices, Smarter Privacy is an in-person, youth-centered privacy-by-design workshop led by Dr. Ajay Shrestha (Vancouver Island University), designed to help students, parents/guardians, and employees better understand how everyday smart devices, including voice assistants and connected apps, collect, use, and share data, and what practical privacy-by-design can look like in daily life. In this session, participants explore real-world privacy decisions such as device settings, app permissions, household norms, and using devices in shared spaces, and contribute perspectives that inform future public engagement and design guidance. Session highlights include interactive activities and discussion, a hands-on device privacy audit, and practical takeaways for safer, more informed smart-device use.
