Staton's is another VA classic. It is a very narrow, vertical creek with 5 main drops and some other minor drops in between. This creek is littered with wood so treat it like a new run every time you go. I think minimal flow is 300 and I would assume 800 would be fairly stout. Local boaters try to go in and cut wood as much as possible. There is a beautiful waterfall at the put-in. The flow ratings on Statons are all from the Pedlar gauge far downstream. Major Rapids (my personal ratings): Chunderslide (V)-There are a few ledge holes above the actual drop. The drop has a weird kicker right in the middle and a head basher rock at the end of the drop on the left. I would only assume the hole at the bottom gets rough at higher flows. Tricky to get correct and the risk of injury is high. I actually walked this after seeing the 3 amigos not have clean runs on it. Johnny Wise Drop (IV-V). At these flows I would rate this a 4. At higher flows I could see the bottom of the drop get retentive and nasty. Easy lead in also. It is about a 15 foot drop and you will get some air so careful with your paddle. Line is right of center. Duck and Run (III-IV). I am not sure if this is the correct name for this rapid but it's the only other name I have seen posted. Pretty straight forward slide, but has wood at the bottom on the left. Run left to right. Cascade (V)-Has a weird flake at the top which makes the lead in a bit tricky. The bottom has a fan rock at the bottom, and the bottom right has a pin rock right after the drop. In addition, Log Flume is just below and a swim or missed rolled would be bad news. This one could be the most consequential because of this. Log Flume (V)-This is a 3 part rapid in my opinion. There is a manky lead in which can mess with your boat angle for the crux boof. Make a slight boof off of the shelf to the left but not too much angle (as shown by me). Go to the left of the next rock with some lean and then immediately lean back right for the flume. Continue down for a cool slide. There is a sieve to the right in the boof gap but most of the water funnels left. Continue down the run out but still be weary of wood. Take out is shortly down on the left. #whitewaterkayaking #pyranhakayaks #Statonscreekva 0:00-0:38 Chunderslide 2:40 Johnny Wise 3:38 Duck and Run 3:59 Cascade 5:39 Log Flume
