Hilarious track by Groove Station, the South African parody music act that rose to local prominence in the late 1980s. Essentially a comedic duo comprised of Al Etto and Rico White, Groove Station specialised in tongue-in-cheek Afrikaans songs that spoofed popular culture and everyday South African life. Their style blended Afrikaans pop and dance music with satirical lyrics and sketch-comedy elements, often referencing contemporary ads, social trends, and local slang. For example, one of their well-known songs, “It’s Not Inside It’s On Top,” parodies a famous 1980s Cremora coffee creamer TV commercial, showing the group’s knack for tapping into shared cultural moments for humour. Groove Station’s members, Al Etto and Rico White, served as songwriters and producers for the project. Nearly all their material was written and arranged by this pair, with Al Etto often taking lead in composition. They enlisted additional performers as needed for comedic effect – including a backing chorus billed as “Die Aliens Trio” and voice actor Dave Burke, who provided a mock sports commentary and interview segment on one album. Debbie Young features on backing vocals on several of their releases. The act’s music was performed primarily in Afrikaans, peppered with colloquial expressions and accents for comic flavour, though they occasionally included English phrases or titles for effect. Their songs, however, enjoyed radio play and cult status at parties, making them a beloved source of comic relief in the South African music scene of that era. Groove Station was active roughly from 1988 to 1991, during which they released a string of albums and singles on the independent Roy B. Records label. Most of their output came in the late 1980s.
