(8 Jun 2000) English/Nat A bomb scare has disrupted a visit by the European Union's security chief Javier Solana, to the Kosovo capital Pristina. The suspected bomb was found on the route that Solana was to take later on Thursday. A man has been arrested and the suspected bomb destroyed. Javier Solana arrived in Pristina safely enough on Wednesday but security around him has been tightened after a bomb scare. Solana is on a two day visit to Kosovo partly to try to halt revenge attacks against Serbs. SOUNDBITE (English) "I have a very intense programme. Tonight I'm having dinner with all the members of the Albanian leadership. Tomorrow I'm going to visit Serbs in Mitrovica and I'd also like to visit Bishop Artemije and I will visit K-FOR and the people from Unmik. So it will be a very intense two days." SUPER CAPTION: Javier Solana, European Union Commissioner for Security Issues On Wednesday night Solana held talks with head of the former Kosovo government Ibrahim Rugova and the Kosovo Liberation Army's political leader Hashim Thaci. Ethnic Albanian ambushes have exposed the continued tensions in the province and the inability of the NATO-led peacekeeping force to fully contain violence. What was discussed at the meeting hasn't been revealed, but Solana was expected to tell Albanian leaders to stop the violence if they ever want to be part of the European family. Peacekeepers have been unable to prevent a recent surge of attacks by ethnic Albanians against the small remaining Serb community. Eight people have died in the past week and many Serbs complain that peacekeepers are failing in their mission. Other items on the meeting's agenda included Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic's crackdown against his opposition and the Serb media, and the killing of an adviser to Montenegro's pro-Western president. Meanwhile, Solana was at the centre of bomb scare on Thursday after a suspicious package was found under a car across from the Unmik police base. SOUNDBITE: (English) "At 8.30 this morning one of our Unmik police officers noticed the suspicious package underneath the vehicle parked across the street from the police station. Upon looking at it was decided that it was better to call the disposal unit, the bomb disposal unit from K- FOR to take a close look at the package. They did that and we had a controlled explosion a few minutes ago about 9.35" SUPER CAPTION: Giles Moreau, Unmik Police A man believed to be a foreign employee of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe in Pristina was arrested and taken away for questioning.
