(2 Apr 2018) Former Guatamalan dictator Efrain Rios Montt, who took power in a coup d'état in March 1982 and led one of the bloodiest periods of the Guatemalan civil war in which the Marxist guerrillas were supposed to be killed, died on Sunday morning. He was 91-years-old and was accused of genocide but he barely stepped into prison. The Guatemalan Congress weighed the possibility of honouring him, however, the ex-general's family opted for an express funeral. His lawyers reported the death due to a heart attack on Sunday morning and in the afternoon, his body had already been buried in a local cemetery. One of his lawyers, Jayme Hérnandez, said Guatemala had lost a great leader. "He had the courage to stand to the left in 1982, and that is how Guatemala rescued his institutions," he added.
