The Fanatics are everyday Australians, who have decorated their homes with their own personal obsessions. From beer cans to science fiction, the fanatics inspire us to embrace our own passions in our home decorating. In this weekly instalment, royal enthusiast Jan Hugo takes us through her collection of royal family memorabilia. With 10,000 collectible items, Jan houses the largest royal family collection in Australia. Living with her husband David in Cessnock in the Hunter Valley, four of their five bedrooms are filled with royal family memorabilia. There is a room dedicated entirely to Princess Diana, homemade caricature masks of Camilla and Charles, and an authentic guard’s suit from Buckingham Palace. The memorabilia ranges from cups and plates, to magazines and dolls – anything that relates to the Royal Family. The house doubles as a museum, in which people can pay to have a tour of the collection. Jan says the obsession all started when the couple was gifted a commemorative royal coin. From there, she continued to buy memorabilia, until it grew to what it is today. Several serious royalists have been offended by the content of their collection, but Jan says that her and David are not royalists, and insists that it’s important to see the humour in these things. David has a collection of his own – a ‘man cave’ of 5,800 beer cans. They also share a collection of Arnott’s biscuit tins. Despite running the museum at a loss, Jan insists that it is the love of collecting and sharing their collection with the world that drives them, not turning a profit. Liked this episode?
