Steam Melbourne to Albury and Culcairn 1967

It is now more than 50 years since the Melbourne based Association of Railway Enthusiasts organised a very long over 400 mile day steam train excursion to Albury and Culcairn NSW. The brochure for the trip stated that it was now some 13 years since the streamlined three cylinder S class Pacific steam locomotives pounded up and down the main north east line between Albury and Melbourne flying through towns like Wangaratta at as close to 70 miles per hour as the engine crew could manage. The day was to be a part commemoration of those times although more at leisure due to time needed to service the R class steam locomotive at Seymour and some photo stops which were scheduled between Seymour and Albury. A change from the broad gauge at Albury to a standard gauge train as in pre 1962 days before the standard gauge was opened between Albury and Melbourne was experienced. The standard gauge train, Albury to Culcairn and return, was headed by one of the two 50 class Albury steam shunters that shared shunting duties there at the time. The journey commenced early in the morning on a cold winters day and there are some scenes taken from the platform of the parlour car Yarra at the rear of the train which include the Melbourne bound Southern Aurora and the Spirit of Progress and a Sydney to Melbourne goods train which was fitted in between. As we sped through stations and towns, trains were placed in sidings allowing us to run through without delay and there are glimpses of various other goods and passenger trains and locomotives of those times, including the Intercapital Daylight. Beyond Albury there is a cross with a 44 class hauled freight at Table Top, a photo stop, an automatic staff exchange at high speed at Gerogery, and at Culcairn, a 45 class hauled train, and the passing of the Melbourne Intercapital Daylight with a 42 class leading. A day to indeed remember, captured in those pre-video times on 8mm film.
