Yesterday, March 5th, marked the 90th anniversary of the first flight of the Supermarine Spitfire in 1936. Designed by Reginald Joseph Mitchell in the early 1930s, the prototype, K5054, first took flight at Eastleigh in Hampshire on March 5th, 1936. While Mitchell would see the prototype fly, he unfortunately would not live long enough to witness the success the Spitfire would become, being manufactured in 1938 at Castle Bromwich, Birmingham, with it first entering service with No.19 Squadron at RAF Duxford. It became a pivotal part of RAF Fighter Command and acheived legendary status during the Battle of Britain in 1940 where it saw great success and despite being outnumbered by the Hawker Hurricane, it had a greater victory to loss ratio and a lower attrition rate. The Spitfire would be produced up until 1948, from Mk.I to Mk.XXIV, being used in both the European and Pacific Theatre in numerous roles, such as ground-attack and photo reconaissance at high altitudes, highlighting its versatility. Initial variants were powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 from Mk.I to Mk.XI at which point it would be replaced and then powered by the newer Rolls-Royce Griffon V12 up until Mk.XXIV Roughly 240 Spitfires remain today across the globe with around 70 still airworthy with that number slowly growing. Though replicas exist, the three shown in the video are all original, MH434 (the lead aircraft) was owned by New Zealand aviator, Ray Hanna, who became famous due to being one of the founding members of the Red Arrows in 1964. It is now owned by the Old Flying Machine Company and based at IWM Duxford.
