In this 228 lap race that had the winning team travel 1908.0380 kms to win, Horst Kroll paired up with driver Jacques Duval to drive a Porsche 904 GTS. The team placed 16th. 60,000 people attended this race. Both Dan Guerney and Ken Miles set race records. Tragic notes on the race: "What happened mid-race at Sebring is both a mystery and a tragedy. Eyewitnesses give varying accounts: that the car veered sharply, as if suffering from a mechanical failure such as a broken caliper, or a failure of the right front suspension. Others point out that the car had just left the pits, and was chasing another GT40 on cold tires and cold brakes. Some unpublished research exists to indicate that the door of McLean's GT40 was being opened, as if fuel had spilled into the cabin—the GT40s had fuel fillers on their roof —and he was fighting off the fumes," wrote Brendan McAleer in a Road & Track article called Remembering Bob McLean, the Man Who Died Racing the First Ford GT40 Chassis. "Theories abound, but the facts are brutal. Chassis P1000 left the track and rolled, eventually hitting a utility pole. Later crash testing would show just how dangerous the GT40 was, with every driver sitting in a magnesium pontoon boat filled with fuel. The tanks ruptured, the car caught fire, and McLean's chance at glory became a funeral pyre. The ill-equipped track marshals couldn't fight the blaze. Four more people would die that day when a Porsche 906 collided with Mario Andretti's spinning Ferrari and went into the crowd."
