Do you "hip shift" when you squat? You try to squat down evenly but can't? There can be many reasons for a hip shift when someone performs a squat. On today's video, I address one of the more common causes: Hip Mobility. We tend to hip shift to the side of the restricted mobility hip. For example, I squat and hip shift to the left side. How can I tell if my left hip is restricted. Lay down on the ground and perform the FABER Test. Bend your knee and cross your ankle over the opposite knee. Check how far you can lower your knee towards the ground. Then check the opposite leg? Is it even on both sides? Or does your left knee not go down as far? If you left knee does not go down as far, then you have restricted external rotation and extension in your left hip. Most likely, it's causing your left hip shift when you squat. So what do you do? 1. Start with myofascial release techniques using a spikey massage ball over the involved muscles. Most likely, these muscles will have fascial adhesions (AKA scar tissue). What muscles do we need to perform myofascial release techniques on? The adductors, piriformis, glute medius, and the hip flexors. 2. Next, I demonstrate a great stretch to increase mobility in your adductor muscles. 3. Modified Hip Airplane: This exercise is used to open the hip joint up and increase mobility. 4. Activate the glutes on the side of your hip shift. Most likely you will need to retrain the glutes on this side to activate again. I demonstrate 2 different glute activation exercises for this. Give these awesome techniques to correct your squat hip shift a try. After you do, let me know how it felt. Did you notice some immediate improvement? Leave me a comment in the comment section down below. I'd love to hear your thoughts! Remember, stay young and train hard!
