Just two months ago, the farm was holding on by a thread. We had reached a point where we could no longer water all the crops. The sun had baked the black alluvial soil so dry that it cracked wide open, swallowing any water we tried to pour. Every drop disappeared into the earth, leaving little to nourish our plants. We made the tough decision to stop watering the vegetables and instead focused on keeping the Pixie oranges alive. The kales began to wither and turn brown, losing their leaves one by one. The watermelons shriveled, and the red chillies that once stood proud began to droop under the weight of the heat. We waited—hoping, praying—for the rains to come. And then, they did. It’s now been two months since the long rains began, and stepping back onto the farm feels like walking into a miracle. The transformation is nothing short of breathtaking. The once-dry ground is now a lush, tangled sea of green. The Pixie orange trees that we fought to keep alive are not only standing — they are thriving. Full of fresh green leaves, new shoots, and fruits forming on their branches. The kales have bounced back beautifully, their leaves wide and vibrant once again. The pawpaw trees, which had been struggling, are now taller, stronger, and beginning to flower. New watermelon plants have sprouted from the soil like a second chance, and the red chillies are scattered everywhere — healthy, fiery, and resilient. But with this new life comes a new challenge — weeds. The rains that brought back the farm also brought a jungle of wild growth. Parts of the farm are now impassable, covered in thick green undergrowth. It’s a reminder that with nature’s blessing also comes work, and we’re ready for it. This video captures the heart of our farm @FARMINGHorizons — the hardship, the hope, and the harvest. It’s a testament to what patience, faith, and perseverance can bring.
