True birds have existed for roughly 150 million years (that is, since the middle of the Age of Dinosaurs). However, those earliest birds were very different from our modern birds, in fact most were not closely related at all to the birds that populate our world. The evidence is that several modern bird orders co-existed with other dinosaurs, but others did not evolve until 25 or more million years after the “terrible lizards" perished (think: big asteroid, 66 MYA). The question this talk addresses is, "when did familiar, recognizably modern birds appear?” and how do we know? Learn about "rocks and clocks" and how what has been deduced, has been! Dr. Adelson has had a particular passion for paleontology since childhood, and holds an abundance of degrees in Evolutionary Biology, Psychology, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and Physical Anthropology. Since concluding her academic career and moving to Washington, among her many activities have been roles on the Black Hills Audubon Society Board and membership on the Audubon Washington Board of Directors. We have previously been regaled and enlightened by Kim's presentations, parts 1 and 2: ”The Dinosaurs Amongst Us” and "The Birds Who Lived with (Other) Dinosaurs.” Recordings of these talks are also available on this WOS YouTube channel. Kim presented this talk at the Monthly Meeting of the Washington Ornithological Society ... "virtually" via Zoom, on December 5, 2022.
