Farmers have been protesting at Punjab's Shambhu and Khanauri borders since February this year, highlighting their grievances. On Monday, the Supreme Court addressed a habeas corpus petition alleging the illegal detention of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal by Punjab police. The court noted that Dallewal had been released and had rejoined the protest. As per allegations, Dallewal was removed from the Khanauri border protest site and taken to a Ludhiana hospital as he prepared to begin a fast-unto-death on November 26. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan closed the petition, stating that the leader was no longer in custody. The bench emphasized the importance of peaceful protests while cautioning against public inconvenience. "In a democratic setup, peaceful protests are a right, but they must not disrupt the public. The Khanauri border is a lifeline for Punjab," the court remarked. The Supreme Court also noted that related issues are already being considered in another matter.
