We film aboard the Italian and Maltese coast guard ships and helicopters, collect film footage of the worst migrant boat disasters, and we interview migrants who have survived the crossing. This episode intertwines with another story under development: Samia Bin Yusefa was an athlete in the Somali team during the Peking Olympic Games who drowned attempting to enter Italy on a migrant boat. The producers have access to a dedicated Egyptian team who have followed the trafficking of humans from Syria and Gaza, while stunning images of the Libyan camps (including Tripoli Zoo where migrants are held) underscore the dramatic nature of this trade. We interview survivors against the backdrop of the rusting hulks that made it to the shores of Sicily or Lampedusa, we interview aid workers and coast guard operatives who manage the crisis on the ground and magistrates who investigate the deaths, each of which is classified as a crime.
