(3 Jul 2023) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: ++BEGINS ON SOUNDBITE++ ASSOCIATED PRESS Nanterre - 3 July 2023 1. SOUNDBITE (French) Patrick Jarry, Nanterre mayor: "Since Tuesday, the nights have been difficult for all the inhabitants of our city, for young people and for children. The violence that has been going on for several nights in a row after the death of Nahel is unacceptable. We have said it from the start, violence leads nowhere and weakens the immense movement of emotion that surrounds the family and loved ones of Nahel as well as the demand for justice that we must all bear together." ++BLACK FRAMES++ 2. SOUNDBITE (French) Patrick Jarry, Nanterre mayor: "This violence, we know too well, penalizes in the first place the children, the young people, and the families of our neighborhoods and all the inhabitants of our city. So today, with the municipal team, those who were able to render this possible fairly quickly, we want to thank all those who have contributed in recent days to putting an end to this violence and limiting its consequences." ++BLACK FRAMES++ 3. SOUNDBITE (French) Patrick Jarry, Nanterre mayor: "Last night, there were very few incidents in Nanterre, one of which, clearly, was not linked to this urban violence. We, therefore, continue to call on all the inhabitants in their diversity, to make sure that the violence that ended last night continues on that path." ++BLACK FRAMES++ 4. SOUNDBITE (French) Patrick Jarry, Nanterre mayor: "We hope that justice will be done for Nahel and that the call to stop the violence and degradation launched by the family of Nahel and in particular by his grandmother, will be heard and respected." ++BLACK FRAMES++ 5. SOUNDBITE (French) Patrick Jarry, Nanterre mayor: "Of course, together we will continue - we continue and we will continue - to act on a daily basis so that in our city, in our neighborhoods, residents and young people in particular benefit from the quality public services they need." 6. Jarry leaving podium, applause 7. SOUNDBITE (French) Patrick Jarry, Nanterre mayor: "In any case, for the moment, I believe that it is necessary to heed the call by Nahel's family, from his grandmother whom I thank from the bottom of my heart, on this message of appeasement." 8. Jarry leaving STORYLINE: The mayor of Nanterre, where a 17-year-old was fatally shot by police last week during a traffic stop sparking nationwide riots, said violence in the city had abated. Speaking in the Paris suburb of Nanterre on Monday Patrick Jarry appealed for continued calm saying "violence leads nowhere and weakens the immense movement of emotion that surrounds the family and loved ones of Nahel as well as the demand for justice that we must all bear together." Unrest across France sparked by the police shooting of 17-year-old Nahel appeared to slow on its sixth night, but fires and vandalism continued to target public buildings, cars and municipal trash cans overnight into Monday. The riots appeared driven by a teenage backlash. The interior minister said the average age of those arrested was 17 and that children as young as 12 or 13 had been detained for attacking law enforcement and setting fires. In all, according to the Interior Ministry, there were 157 arrests overnight out of a total of 3,354 since last Tuesday, and that two law enforcement stations were attacked, among other damage. There has been little in the way of organized protests beyond a march last week for Nahel, the teenager killed last Tuesday. Nahel was of Algerian descent and was shot in Nanterre.
