Q&A WITH DR. SCOTT MOSSER: Are patients required to be on hormones to qualify for top surgery? Gender affirming top surgery is an umbrella term for a variety of chest reconstruction and breast reduction procedures that can help someone alleviate gender dysphoria and experience greater gender congruence. These procedures are sometimes called “chest masculinization,” “female to male (FTM) top surgery,” and occasionally “chest gender nullification.” Our top surgeons use the more neutral term “top surgery” in recognition of the fact that many of our patients neither identify as men nor are they seeking to “masculinize” their body. The GCC is one of the few gender-specialized surgical centers that has experience working with patients with high BMIs, who have not undergone hormone replacement therapy (HRT), are of an older age, have a disability and/or do not explicitly identify as transgender or transmasculine. We are committed to working with our patients on a case-by-case basis to help them access some of the highest quality gender affirming care there is.
