Painting dark values is not an easy task for young art students. It may be especially intimidating to do so in watercolor. In this Part 2 video, I explain the goal of this still life exercise. Prior to this, the students practiced painting a variety of objects with various textures and values. This is the next step, the study of dark values. I show the whole process. I explain how to think about what you are looking at and what you are seeing. I stress the key principles of painting from life. This video should be very helpful to art students of all ages even those who are not interested in painting still life because the rudimentary principles of painting I teach in this video are the same no matter what you paint. In the Russian Art Academy still life drawing and painting courses are a prerequisite to portrait, figure and plein air. In my tutorial videos, I teach invaluable knowledge that will lead to improvements in your artistic skills overall. What I teach is not my method, style, preference or opinion. It is not something I discovered. I don't reveal secrets, tricks, or tips. I teach a centuries-old, time-proven method developed by the masters built on undisputed art principles. It is a tradition, a way of thinking about the world, a way of seeing it and representing it in any given medium. Slowing down, taking your time, paying attention, thinking, asking questions and finding answers takes time. This is the art academy's way of learning. Taught this way, a student can pick up any medium, including digital, be creative and start producing quality artwork. I often hear that in the United States traditional arts were not taught for decades and that today's successful representational artists had to start over again, re-discover techniques, and develop methods. Since I came from Russia where traditional arts were preserved and the same teaching method continued uninterrupted for centuries, passed from one master artist to the next, I don't have to reinvent the wheel and I don't claim to have developed it. To me the traditional arts weren't forgotten or discarded, they were always admired, taken seriously and taught at a high level. Thus I am striving to preserve the uninterrupted thread of the representational art's tradition. _________________________________________ Elena Roché was academically trained in Moscow, Russia.
