Alright, I'm going to level with you. I'm clearly an Anglophile when it comes to music. From early flirtations with The Police when I was a tween to my subsequent infatuation with all things punk and post-punk, goth, shoegaze and so on. Britannia has never disappointed. But when it comes to the latest band being hyped by the NME or the rest of the British press, I remain a skeptic until proven otherwise. There is much style over substance and undercooked bands that haven't put in the time to be any good (yet). So my first encounter with Fontaines D.C. did not go well. The band played the song 'A Hero's Death' on the Jimmy Fallon show. TBH, I wanted to hate them before they got started and I didn't particularly care for their performance nor their chosen song. So I passed on the hype. "F*ck those guys" I told myself. ----- But then came a tour with Shame, a band that I'm quite fond of ("they can't suck that bad if they're touring with Shame, right?") and so I gave them another chance. And this time they charmed the hell out of me. I grew fond of 'A Hero's Death' the album and it's not that the titular song, which they'd played on Fallon, sucked. It just wasn't as good as their best. Then came a scintillating performance of 'Jackie Down the Line' on Christiane Amanpour's show on PBS ahead of the release of 'Skinty Fia'. Notable because the show, which focuses on politics and social issues, rarely has musical guests, let alone an interview and full song performance; I was a goner. It pained me when the lads played in Minneapolis at the height of the pandemic, I bought the ticket but skipped the show to avoid quarantine shenanigans. ----- When the North American leg of the 'Romance' tour was announced in May, I was horrified to find out that Minneapolis and Milwaukee were going to be during a week on which I had work travel. So this is how I ended up with tickets to Lawrence KS and Omaha NE instead. Lawrence ended up conflicting with work, so I could not make it but here is Omaha in all of its glory. The band was superb and everything I wanted them to be. Such a wonderful show that despite seeing them I feel shortchanged for not having had the opportunity to see them the night before...I discovered that some lovely fellow obsessives had traveled from Denver (nearly mirroring my own trek from Canada), this recording goes out to them (Jen and Mike, @verynaomi). Thank you for helping to normalize my musical wanderlust... #livemusic #fontainesdc #2024 https://fontainesdc.com/ https://twitter.com/fontainesdublin?l... / fontainesband https://www.instagram.com/fontainesba... ps. please go out and see these bands and support them by purchasing their merch!!!
