Dyson Pure Cool - Purifying Fan Review and Comparison

I bought a new Dyson Pure Cool desk fan and I am really impressed with it. I thought I would do a little review and sound test as well as show what happens when you put a glass of wine near it which is pretty amusing! Firstly I compare these four fans: Dyson AM06 (Non-purifying) Cheap unbranded fan (Non-purifying) Dyson Pure Cool Me (Purifying) Dyson Pure Cool desk (Purifying) I show all four clips on screen along with a cardboard flap to give an idea of airflow. The focus of these tests was to provide some comparative audio and video because I think that is much more important than just decibel levels. You will also see the height of the card changes between the shots, this is purely so that I can place it in the strongest part of the airflow possible. The two fans with the amplifier (the loop) projected a much higher airflow than the others. I think you can still see the angle of the flap though. One thing to note is with no airflow at all the flap still protruded slightly, I include a shot of this so you can see that for reference. You will notice the frequencies in the sound vary quite significantly. The cheap fan has a low pitched whine as well as the high pitched noise. It also kind of hums. With the Dyson fans the sound is much more like a flat ‘hiss’, sort of like white noise and there is less motor whine. This acoustic tuning is what the people only testing decibels miss. This stuff makes a big difference to how tolerable a sound is. I also show a sound test where I match the fan speeds based on what seems like similar air flow. This is a much better way of testing the noise rather than just comparing the maximum levels. As you can see the non-purifying fan is pretty similar in sound level to the cheap fan but much less intrusive in terms of sound characteristics. The purifying fans are definitely louder at equivalent airflow than the non-purifying ones but this is to be expected given the additional resistance they have when sucking the air through a filter. I then show all speed settings of all four fans but recorded using my POV setup with binaural microphones (one in each ear). This gives you a pretty good idea of the way the fans sound in a room if you listen to the video with headphones. The Dyson Pure Cool desk has some really special attention to detail in the user experience and I try to show this in detail in this review.
