Conformation: Cis and Trans Fused Rings

Summary: Fused rings are where two rings share two carbons and a bond. Numbering of the systems starts at one of shared carbons and initially numbers away from the other shared atom. Where there are two cyclohexanes fused together This has the trivial name of Decalin. There are two possible stereochemical arrangements one where the hydrogens at the shared atoms are on the same face (cis), that has two 1,3-diaxial interactions and the other arrangement where the same hydrogens are on opposite faces (trans), lacking 1,3-diaxial interactions and so of lower energy.
