Diving Looe Key Reef - 2019

January 3th 2019 Looe key reef is part of the Looe key sanctuary preservation area and is one of my favorite dive sites in Florida. On this day, the water was a bit milky after a few days of rough seas, but there was still a lot to enjoy. This is my first trip to the reef since Hurricane Irma significantly damaged the middle keys. I was happy to see some healthy coral, but unfortunately there were numerous examples of disease and coral die off. There are many factors involved here including increased hurricanes, increased ocean temperatures, ocean acidification, and pollution. The Florida reef system has been dealing with a multi-year outbreak of coral disease. Scientists are still gathering data and working to limit the spread. Hopefully we all continue to work together to help improve the water quality for reefs globally.
