Crystal Axis is a five-piece punk/alternative band based in Nairobi, Kenya. The band plays a tasteful blend of punk and grunge, with post-punk and hardcore influences. Despite the simplicity of punk rock, Crystal Axis has a unique sound that sets them apart and puts them on the map as being one of the best rock acts in sub-Saharan Africa. Crystal Axis was formed by Djae Aroni and Neel Vaghela as teenagers when they attended the same high school. Abuga was quickly recruited as their drummer and they played as a three-piece band for several years under the name ‘Inertia’. In the summer of 2011, Ahmed Bulhan joined the band as the lead vocalist and bassist. Crystal Axis was active for many years in the Kenyan rock scene, but live performances were often limited in numbers as the band was made up entirely of teenagers and they were all underage. Despite this, Crystal Axis persisted with their love and passion for music and went on to establish themselves as one of the biggest Kenyan punk rock acts to date. In 2012, the band released their debut E.P ‘State of Unease’ and received much acclaim for the record. ‘Devil Sold His Soul’ was the first single to be released from the E.P and it received a great response both locally and internationally. Crystal Axis became the first Kenyan band to reach the number one spot on the X-fm TRC top 25 countdown with the single. Following the release of their E.P in 2012, the members of Crystal Axis took a step back from the music in order to complete their education before making their return to the Kenyan music scene. Upon returning to the Kenyan rock scene in 2017, Djae recruited Ronjey as the new drummer, and Doug as the bassist. Ahmed would focus solely on being the front-man. Fox was shortly recruited as the new rhythm guitarist. The band is currently in the studio working on their debut full length album.
