Here's Why NASA is Shutting Down the Instruments of Voyager 1 and 2 in Deep Space

Each carried 13.5 kg of plutonium-238 in their RTGs, which generate power through radioactive decay. But as the plutonium weakens, both probes lose about 4 watts of power each year, forcing engineers to shut down non-essential systems. Voyager 1 crossed the heliopause in 2012, followed by Voyager 2 in 2018. To extend their mission, NASA turned off Voyager 2’s plasma science instrument last October and Voyager 1’s cosmic ray subsystem in February. Next, Voyager 2's low-energy charged particle instrument will be shut down, further reducing their scientific capabilities. Despite power constraints, NASA hopes to keep at least one instrument running on each probe into the 2030s. Voyager 1 still operates its magnetometer and plasma wave subsystem, while Voyager 2 continues studying its magnetic field. But at over 15 billion and 13 billion miles from Earth, they remain our most distant explorers, pushing the limits of deep space discovery.
