Bangladesh garment factory fire kills at least 16 and toll may rise, official says

A fire broke out at a garment factory in Bangladesh and at a chemical warehouse adjacent to it on Tuesday, killing at least 16 people and injuring several, officials said, adding that the death toll is expected to rise. “I spoke to her at 8 a.m. last. She said she would come home early today,” Mohammad Sujon, husband of a missing factory worker, said. The fire started on the third floor of a seven-storey factory in Dhaka's Mirpur area before spreading to a chemical warehouse that stored bleaching powder, plastic and hydrogen peroxide, the Fire Service and Civil Defence department said. Eight firefighting units brought the blaze at the factory under control after nearly three hours, though the fire continued at the warehouse.
