Archaeological evidence suggests that this area has been continuously inhabited for more than 2500–3000 years, making Purana Qila one of the oldest living sites in the world. The fort we see today was mainly constructed during the reign of Mughal emperor Humayun and later rebuilt by Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century.
