This video took me three months to make. But in it, I talk about EVERYTHING I can POSSIBLY think of about AKIRA (both the movie and manga): the animation, the drawing techniques, the philosophy, the history--including the military Showa Regime, World War II, Japanese Reconstruction, Douglas MacArthur, The Cold War, The 1964 and 2020 Olympics, Emperor Hirohito, Friedrich Nietzsche...and how it all ties into the bizarre and bewildering world of Akira, and also into my personal humanist perspective on...the roles of humans and art in society, and maybe the meaning of life! And how it all neatly falls into one of two conceits: creation and destruction. This was one of the most exhausting videos I've ever made. Yet it's also the most comprehensive and personally rewarding video I've worked on, and I'm very happy with the end result...and if you liked it as well, that's AMAZING!! Thanks a ton for watching me talk for a very long time about a 1980s Japanese cartoon movie! If you liked this video, please consider subscribing! It would really mean a lot! Or maybe comment or like! Or share with your friends! Because I do want to make more videos for more people to watch! Okay thanks, and have a great day!! =====TIMESTAMPS===== 0:00 PART 1 - CREATION 5:47 The Opening Shot of 1988 Tokyo 7:20 Katsuhiro Otomo's Animation/Drawing Style 9:52 Kaneda/Kei's Discussion in the Prison Cell 11:16 Kaneda's Motorcycle 12:38 NEO TOKYO 18:02 Baby Imagery 19:05 Closing Thoughts on "Creation" 20:10 PART 2 - DESTRUCTION 21:51 Nezu's Speech to Ryu about Akira and Neo-Tokyo 22:48 Akira's relation to World War II and the Cold War 27:04 The Olympics 28:38 Anti-Authoritarianism / Anti-Militarism 31:22 Tetsuo Character Analysis 33:27 "Akira is Absolute Energy" 37:15 Destruction and Creation 38:55 Symbolism of Blood and the Color Red 41:13 The Music of Geinoh Yamashirogumi 42:34 PART 3 - HUMANITY 46:50 Kaneda and Tetsuo 50:02 God and Man 51:48 Friedrich Nietzsche (GOD IS DEAD and The Ubermensch) 55:05 The Art of Creation 56:52 The Last Man 58:18 Conclusion and Analysis of the End of the Film/Manga 1:03:36 Outro =====SOCIAL LINKS===== Instagram: / the.local.mangaka FULL ESSAY ON GOOGLE DOC HERE: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1E... ==================== Features footage from the film Akira, pages from the manga Akira, pages from the art book "Akira Club", and footage from the documentary "Akira: Production Report".
