For the month of July, Russo Lee Gallery is pleased to present "You Are Living In A Poem" by James Allen. Known for his book excavations, the artist believes that a poem “unfurls in unexpected waves, like a book.” Many of his book excavations reveal a new combination of words and are poems in their own right. This exhibition features a free-standing sculpture made of vintage Horizon magazines, crowned with what looks like a lampshade, created from major imagery in art history. His book excavations can be found in Public collections at UCLA, Johns Hopkins University, Ringling College of Art and Design, University of Puget Sound, University of Colorado Boulder, Baylor University, and the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. He's also exhibited across the country in New York, Seattle, Chicago, Milwaukee, Portland, Miami, and San Francisco. James Allen disrupts the concept of a linear narrative with an artistic medium that he refers to as book excavations: he selectively cuts through pages, isolating fragments of images and words to create a cohesive composition from the depths of the book. While the compositions emerge intuitively, the resulting imagery is cohesive and sometimes narrative. Subject matter—historical and archaic subjects, haute couture, botany, the aquatic world—are as numerous as the pages themselves.
