Sustainability Strategy, Why Social Media & Social Channels Matter for your Sustainability Strategy There are over 3 billion people using social media accounts meaning that almost half the world’s population is logging on and updating their status and sharing stories in these online communities. According to a report compiled by Hootsuite and We Are Social there are 3.028 billion active social media users around the world compared with an estimated global population of 7.6 billion people. In our last few posts we have be discussing how to use the business model canvas to develop innovative sustainable business models. One of the key components of this framework is the customer relationships segment – this is how we find, keep and grow our customers. Social channels are one of the most powerful ways for sustainability professionals to reach and nurture your customers to deliver positive environmental and social impacts. The Oxford Dictionary defines a “nation” as a large body of people united by common descent, history, culture, or language, inhabiting a particular state or territory. Social media communities could certainly be considered a large body of people united by common culture and language, inhabiting a particular online territory defined by the social media platforms. If social media platforms were nations they would represent 12 of the top 20 most populous nations on earth These online nations defy traditional national boundaries and can become a powerful tool for tackling global challenges. The challenge for sustainability professionals is how do we engage with these online communities in what can seem to be a chaotic and confusing space. This is often left to the marketing teams but social media can be far more than a marketing tool. Social media can open up a conversation with your audience to better understand the problems they are trying to solve so we can design sustainability solutions to these problems. Whilst it is unlikely you will become an expert in all things social media there are three things to consider when integrating social channels into your sustainability strategy: 1. Find your audience Identify the key stakeholders that you need to make your sustainability successful and find out where they spend their time online. Which social media platforms do they use? What content so they engage with? Which influencers do they listen to? 2. Respect the channel You need to understand the channels where you are going to engage with your audience and the reasons they are on those platforms. Why are they there? Are they looking for information, entertainment, social connection, or to purchase? You also need to respect the media they are engaging with on those channels. Should you post a link to a YouTube video on your Facebook business page or should you post a square format video natively onto Facebook to get to best engagement on mobile? Posting cute pictures of your cats might be fun on Facebook but posting the same thing on LinkedIn would be like turning up to a black tie dinner in shorts and an old t-shirt – your audience is probably not going to appreciate it. 3. Deliver quality content Finally make sure your deliver quality content that delivers what your audience is after, delivers real value, and helps them solve a problem. The audiences for our sustainability initiatives are increasing spending their time in these online nations and if we are not talking to them through these channels then our message is never going to reach them. Social media and sustainability can be a powerful force for you to deliver positive environmental and social outcomes from your sustainability strategy. But as sustainability professionals be need to embrace our creativity and begin to learn how to engage these online nations using language and media that our audiences desire.
