Dan Moore and Iowa Percussion in the premiere performance of Enigmatic Journey for marimba solo and percussion ensemble. An Enigmatic Journey isn’t a vacation where you relax and unwind. It’s an adventure in which you step out of your comfort zone into a world of experiences that are mysterious, puzzling, and often impossible to fully understand. Along the way, you grow as a person and as a member of the human race. This composition—much like the composer—has made its own enigmatic journey. Enigmatic Journey for solo marimba began many years ago with a few simple ideas in the form of an easy marimba solo for a former student. It was inspired by the music of Al Di Meola and Jean-Luc Ponty, and was meant to sound like a classic “Spanish opener,” to use an old drum corps phrase. The piece sat unused for several years until my first journey to Argentina when I brought it out for a solo concert at the 2005 Patagonia Percussion Festival. I reworked the solo by expanding sections and adding classic marimba hot licks. The new solo was a big hit at the festival, and I’ve performed it many times since. I always thought it would be effective as a solo with ensemble. After several attempts to create a suitable ensemble setting for the solo (orchestra, wind ensemble, string quartet), percussion ensemble emerged as the perfect vehicle for this Enigmatic Journey. Sheet music available from Row-Loff Productions.
