A great programme of folk and traditional music. International gathering of iconic Folk Musicians. The opening night, of the long running Festival was on Thursday September 13th 1979 at Douglas GAA Club; (there was no Festival in 1988) Put together from year to year purely on a voluntary basis by a dedicated group of enthusiasts, aided by major sponsorship, and a combination of various sponsors and supporters, including those who contribute financially to the cost of staging the festival, Cork City Council, the Arts Council, Fáilte Ireland, Beamish Irish Stout and CIT, and the Evening Echo and C103FM for support through media sponsorship . It's endurance is a tribute to the energy and labour of it's workers. it's appropriate to acknowledge the voluntary organising committee, and also the many volunteer workers who take charge of doors, organise artist accommodation, look after publicity, liaise with artists, and numerous other things involved in making such an event possible year on year.Particular recognition for Jim Walsh, Chairman and someone who has been a vital cog in Festival organisation since that very first year, long-serving Festival Director William "Hammy" Hammond, and also Timmy "the Brit" McCarthy, the inspirational figure behind the Festival's inception, as well as it's original Director/Secretary. The Festival included 'T with the Maggies' whose members are some of Ireland's finest traditional singers featuring Moya Brennan of Clannad, Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill from the Bothy Band, Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill of Skara Brae and Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh of Altan. There is a celebration of the musical lives of two special people, Sean Ó Riada and Seamus Creagh. There are the pipes, fiddle, and box concerts, Live in the Community, the Céilí Mór, a photo exhibition, childrens' workshops and the revival of the traditional song competition. ==== Seamus Creagh, Fiddler / Teacher / Composer / Singer Seamus was regarded as one of the premier exponents of the Sliabh Luachra style of Fiddle playing. Seamus Creagh (1946-2009), was born in Killucan, County Westmeath in 1946. His early musical education was an introduction to dance band violin from his neighbour Larry Ward. A brief excursion with a ballad group in Dublin where he played guitar, brought him closer to the traditional fold. In the early sixties he spent many a night in O'Donoghues Pub with Ted Furey, the fiddler who was a vital bridge between the Irish ballad and traditional scene. Then in 1967 he made trip to Baltimore in West Cork, just for a weekend, but he never escaped the pull of Cork. Back in Cork in the late sixties Seamus began playing with world renowned accordion player Jackie Daly at CCE sessions in the Country Club Hotel. This opened his ears to the music of Slaibh Luachra. He lived for five years in Newfoundland and Labrador. Seamus was to perform and teach his craft throughout the province from 1987 to 1992. He performed as a member of Newfoundland Traditional Group "Tickle Harbour," It was during this stay Seamus also recorded his solo recording "Came the Dawn" at Dadyeen Studios in St. John's. Both this album and Seamus' influence from live performance and lessons were a large influence on a whole generation of Newfoundland Traditional Musicians. His death was a great loss to both Irish and Newfoundland Traditional Music.
