What is an SAP? A Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) is a specialist who evaluates employees who have violated drug and alcohol regulations, particularly under the Department of Transportation (DOT) guidelines. Their role includes: Conducting Assessments – Evaluating employees who test positive for drugs or alcohol or violate substance use policies. Recommending Treatment – Referring employees to appropriate education or treatment programs. Monitoring Compliance – Ensuring the employee completes the required program and follows recommendations. Follow-Up Evaluations – Conducting a final assessment to determine if the employee can return to safety-sensitive duties. Follow-Up Testing Plans – Establishing a structured testing schedule to monitor the employee’s compliance after returning to work.
