The dam is 78.5m high and has an effective capacity of approximately 2.9 billion liters, and serves as the headwaters of the Kuma River, which is known as one of Japan's three largest rapids. The lake water is sent to the southern part of the Kuma River for agriculture, flood control and power generation. The lake is about 14 km in circumference with a circular road running around it, and about 20,000 cherry trees are planted along its lakeside. The large fountain, which is about 80 meters high, is a symbol of the Ichifusa Dam. Ichifusa Mountain, which can be seen behind the dam, is a mountain of faith in the Kuma and Mara regions and, at 1,721 meters above sea level, is the main peak in the southern part of the Kyushu Mountains. This mountain, which is covered with snow even in spring when cold air flows in, has been selected as one of the "100 Japanese Nature Sites to Leave Behind" and is a treasure trove of flora and fauna, including Japanese serow.
