Shakira’s Enclosure Upgrade | Building a Natural Desert Habitat for a Gray Banded Kingsnake Today we’re giving Shakira, our Gray Banded Kingsnake, a major enclosure upgrade! 🐍 Instead of her simple “bare necessities” setup, we’re building a naturalistic desert-style habitat inspired by the rocky environments these beautiful snakes come from in the wild. Using Zoo Med Excavator Clay, slate, natural wood, and desert décor, I try to recreate a rocky desert ledge like the picture of a gray banded kingsnake that stuck in my head from a book when I was a kid. The goal: build a background and terrain that looks natural while giving Shakira plenty of enrichment to explore. But… things didn’t exactly go perfectly. 😅 During the build we ran into cracking in the excavator clay background, supply delays, and a few unexpected lessons along the way.
