The Rhineland Massacres of 1096 (or Edicts of 4856 to Jews at the time as 4856 was the year in the Jewish calendar) was a series of anti-Semitic massacres which occurred during the First Crusade. Many perceived the Jews as as much of a threat as the Muslims in the Holy Lands and blamed them for the death of Christ. Some Christian Lords borrowed money from Jewish lenders and accused them of usury (unfair interest charged on lending) which was a sin according to the Catholic Church. Most likely they couldn't afford the repayments and used anti-Semitism as an excuse to kill the lenders so they didn't have to replay the loans.
