Development cooperation is at a critical juncture. As geopolitical tensions dominate political agendas, sustainable development is slipping down the list of global priorities. The recent wave of geopolitical fragmentation – with the U.S. slashing its aid commitments and several European countries following suit – risks devastating consequences for the Global South. Experts warn of mounting public health crises and the erosion of hard-won development gains. But fragmentation is ultimately a political construct; the physical realities we face remain shared and inseparable. The overlapping crises of pandemics, climate change, and biodiversity loss make this clear. These challenges are inherently global — and can only be met through global cooperation. On January 22, 2026, we re-imagined the future of international cooperation. There is no single solution to ending poverty or halting environmental destruction, but there are possibilities ahead; concrete steps we can take. Together, we examined Global Public Investment — an emerging approach that seeks to pool resources across countries to advance shared global goals.
