Hey everyone! Hope you’re all doing good. In this video, I demonstrate the factory sounds from my GeneralMusic (GEM) WS2 Workstation keyboard. These are all of the sounds you can find on the front panel of the instrument. Internally, the WS2 has way more sounds in it. This keyboard is really dear to my heart, since it's the first ever real keyboard I played on as a little kid. In fact, I learned how to play keyboards on this thing. It was first owned by my grandma, who bought it second-hand back in 1992/1993. After years of owning and playing it, she ended up giving it to me a few years ago. I'm happy to share with you now, the awesome sounds coming from this old beast. Like I said at the start of the video, don’t expect any beautiful keyboard playing. Primarily, the keyboard/piano is not my main instrument. Hope you enjoy the video either way :). ||||||||| So enough about that, let’s talk about the WS2, shall we? Released in 1990, the GEM WS2 Keyboard Workstation is on of the many of GeneralMusic’s WS line of workstation keyboards. In this series are: WS2 Keyboard Workstation, the one I’m playing in the video. WS2 Midi Workstation, a desktop module version. WS400 Piano Workstation, a piano version of the WS2. WS1 Keyboard Workstation, a lighter and cheaper version of the WS2. WS1 D Keyboard Workstation, the WS1 with a built-in diskdrive. WS1 Oriental Keyboard, not sure what this keyboard is exactly. All of the versions use the same sound source, the same FX and they all have a built-in sequencer. The great thing about the WS2 is that you can edit a lot of the sounds. Change the ADSR, edit the name, etc. Basically create your own patches and sounds. The WS2 has 128 voices in total, including a full drumkit, as demonstrated in the video. The WS2 uses 2 MB of ROM samples and waveforms. With the diskdrive you can add more voices, songs, FX to the already existing ones. The parameters that you can change for every sound, except for the drumkit, are: Timbre, what PCM sound. Detune, creates a second detuned tone. Envelope, ADSR. Envelope tracking. Modulation. Skew, a pitch-envelope with a attack and release. Dynamic Switch, switches different sounds at different velocities while playing. Effects: a ton of effects ranging from, reverb, delays, modulation, etc. With the built-in sequencer, you get 5 channels to record on. The more you add, the more the WS2 takes away some the polyphony. You can make a total of 32 songs on just the WS2 alone. But you can save more songs using the diskdrive. The WS2 is also a great arranger keyboard, with many styles to choose from, to play along too. Using the first two octaves of the keyboard, you can change the chords to fit with your arrangement. One interesting thing about the effects on the WS2, is that some of the stereo effects have a 360 degree effect too them, which gives the sound a more spacious feel. Some notable effects that use this 360 stereo effect are: PanMix. (Chorus mixed with a delay and reverb) PanEcho. Stereo 1, 2, 3 and 4 (reverb mixed with delay) Maybe some of the modulation effects, like the phasers too? That’s all I’ve got to tell you about the WS2… Don't forget to leave a Like, comment and if you want to see more, please consider subscribing! Take care everyone!
