(24 Aug 1995) Serbo-Croat/Nat Celebrations have died down in the Bihac pocket the north western Bosnian enclave recently liberated from a crippling Bosnian Serb siege. Now the grim reality of rebuilding has begun - made more complicated by difficulties in getting supplies to the region. Hospitals and medical facilities - which continue to care for the sick and wounded - are among the worst affected. APTV has this special report from Bihac. Life seems to be getting back to normal, even as shops remain sandbagged. The effort of gathering fuel and fulfilling basic needs is still great as the community struggles to catch up after a long period of isolation. Bihac is desperately in need of medical supplies although a German convoy arrived two days ago with drugs and equipment. Hospital records indicate 14-thousand major operations have been performed during the months of isolation. Even now people wounded by mortars have to receive urgent treatment. The difficulty in supplying the Bihac pocket means that medicine often arrives after its expiry date. The director of the hospital says his main aim is to treat regular civilian diseases which have been ignored - cancers, child ailments and geriatric complaints. SOUNDBITE: (Croatian) "Most of this help - food, drugs and medical material - was waiting a long time to enter the area so most of the supplies we are getting now are expired and are useless." SUPER CAPTION: Doctor Bekir Tatlic, Hospital Director The hospital still needs basic equipment to function properly - items such as X-ray and ultrasound which in other places are considered standard.
