A moment of reflection, history, and powerful voices. During the EMPOWER concert on February 7 at MATCH Midtown in Houston, Apollo Chamber Players presented the World Premiere of And Still We Cross (2025) by composer Daniel Bernard Roumain as part of the ensemble’s 18th season. At the heart of this work are voices. Soprano Penelope Campbell, alto Elizabeth Tait, tenor Wayne Ashley, and baritone Keaton Brown bring Roumain’s music to life with intensity and depth. Their performance is joined by narrator Kenneth Morris Jr., a living descendant of Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington, whose words connect past and present through storytelling, memory, and resilience. Together, music and spoken word create a powerful meditation on legacy, struggle, and the ongoing journey toward justice. In the hall that evening, the performance became more than a premiere. It became a shared moment of reflection on history and the paths that brought us here. This performance was presented as part of EMPOWER, a program exploring history, identity, and cultural dialogue through music. Video by Bend Productions. Apollo Chamber Players continues its 18th season with the upcoming season finale VENTURE on May 22.
